Bigger window for WPL 2024? Jay Shah confirms WPL to shift during Diwali Window

BCCI Mulls Second Edition of Women’s Premier League for Diwali

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah declared on Friday that the Board is considering a second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) to be played during the Diwali season. He also confirmed that the home-away format will be introduced in the upcoming edition. The inaugural edition of the tournament was held from March 4-26 in two venues in Mumbai.

Home and Away Format in WPL

Shah stated, “We are mulling the possibility of scheduling the WPL, in the home and away format, in the Diwali window; not two seasons in a year but just a different time window.” He expressed optimism that the tournament will draw an encouraging turnout, given that women’s cricket now has a dedicated audience base.

Seeking Feedback on Asia Cup Venue

Shah had previously made it clear that India would not travel to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup. He also mentioned that feedback from other nations had been sought on a potential venue for the tournament.

Conclusion

The BCCI’s proposal to conduct a second edition of the WPL in the home-away format during the Diwali season is an encouraging development. This will not only provide more opportunity for the women cricketers to showcase their talent, but also help increase the popularity of the sport among the audience.
